The black smoke was a little misleading. Yeah, they were fuel inefficient, but that smoke came from the water injection necessary to keep the internals cool.

But still, early jets burned so much fuel, a lot of analysts thought they would never work in the long run — especially for the military because you could never do 18-hour-plus missions like the B-36 (piston/prop) could do. The fuel load would just be too great. But loiter times aside, the jets could get there so much faster...and then we invented air to air refueling and ICBMs.
